OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental — In a gathering defined by memory and meaning, one story stood out—not because it was different, but because it reflected the journey of many in the room.
More than five decades after the Kabataang Barangay (KB) movement began, former youth leaders from 14 regions reunited in Misamis Occidental, carrying with them the same spirit that once defined their early years in public service.
Among them was their host, Governor Henry S. Oaminal—not just as governor, but as one of their own.
Long before leading the province, Oaminal was also a Kabataang Barangay official, eventually rising to become a national official of the KB movement. His journey—from grassroots youth leadership to provincial governance—mirrored the very essence of what the gathering sought to celebrate: growth, continuity, and the lasting impact of early civic engagement.
The 51st Kabataang Barangay Anniversary, anchored on the theme “Ipagpatuloy ang Kilusang Tungo sa Pag-Asenso ng mga Kabataang Pilipino,” became more than a reunion. It was a reflection of how the seeds planted in the 1970s have grown into decades of leadership across different sectors.
For many attendees, the event was both personal and collective. Stories of organizing barangay activities, mobilizing fellow youth, and navigating early leadership roles resurfaced—reminders of a time when their responsibilities began long before titles and positions came later in life.
Oaminal’s presence as host carried a deeper symbolism. It underscored how the Kabataang Barangay was not just a chapter in history, but a foundation—one that helped shape leaders who would go on to serve in higher capacities.
Beyond the shared stories, Misamis Occidental opened its doors to showcase its own progress. Local government units highlighted their tourist attractions, presenting a province that has evolved while staying rooted in its identity.
The celebration kickoff in a Governor’s Night at the Grand Pavilion in Ozamiz City, where the atmosphere shifted from reflection to celebration. Delegates reconnected over music, conversations, and raffle prizes ranging from ₱5,000 to ₱100,000—simple gestures that added to the warmth of the reunion.
Yet beneath the festivities was a deeper realization.
The Kabataang Barangay may belong to a different era, but its impact remains present. It lives on in the leaders it helped shape, in the communities they continue to serve, and in gatherings like this—where the past is not just remembered, but carried forward.
And in Misamis Occidental, that legacy found both a home—and a future.
