Agriculture in Ozamiz City is getting a fresh boost from an innovative hydroponics initiative led by Jury Rey Catapang, a young entrepreneur balancing two worlds: numbers and crops. While the 29-year-old certified public accountant initially envisioned a career abroad, his passion for farming led him to establish OZ Fresh Greens Hydroponics, a sustainable venture now reshaping local food production.

Meeting Local Needs Through Innovation Catapang’s journey began during the pandemic when he discovered hydroponics farming through online tutorials. Recognizing the logistical challenges Ozamiz City faced in sourcing fresh lettuce from distant locations like Bukidnon and Don Victoriano, he transformed an 800-square-meter plot into a greenhouse-powered oasis. Using nutrient-rich water systems instead of traditional soil-based methods, his farm now supplies 12,000 heads of lettuce monthly to local markets, groceries, and restaurants.

“Hydroponics is perfect for areas with limited space and offers a cost-efficient way to grow high-quality produce,” Catapang explained, emphasizing how greenhouse environments minimize pest problems and operational costs.

Economic and Social Impact Beyond meeting local demand, Catapang’s venture has created employment opportunities and inspired other young people to explore agripreneurship. With an average monthly income of P50,000 to P70,000, OZ Fresh Greens Hydroponics has also diversified its offerings, introducing value-added products like basil pesto paste and pre-packaged salads. His pesto, showcased at the World Bazaar Festival 2024 in Pasay City, became a hit, selling 72 jars within two days.

Support for Young Farmers Catapang credits the Department of Agriculture’s Young Farmers Challenge (YFC) for funding and mentorship that helped him scale his business. As a provincial YFC awardee, he’s also eligible for the Upscale program, designed to expand successful youth-led agricultural initiatives.

Pioneering a New Generation of Farmers Catapang’s story is a testament to the transformative potential of youth in agriculture. By combining innovative techniques with a keen business sense, he’s not only providing fresh produce to his community but also redefining farming as a viable, lucrative career for the next generation.

“Research and learn thoroughly,” he advised aspiring farmers. “Understanding every step from planting to marketing is crucial to success.”

As Ozamiz City continues to benefit from this hydroponics revolution, Catapang’s success underscores the role of young farmers in addressing food security and promoting sustainable practices, proving that agriculture can thrive through innovation and dedication.
