Misamis Occidental, Philippines — In a bold move to boost
the local coconut industry, the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental has
rolled out a comprehensive Training on Geo-Tagging and Geo-Mapping of Coconut
Areas, held from June 16 to 19. The actual fieldwork for geo-tagging is set to
commence from June 20 to July 3.
Spearheaded by the Provincial Planning and Development
Office (PPDO) and the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), the initiative is
implemented with technical assistance from the Philippine Rural Development
Project (PRDP) Region 10.
The training brought together two technical personnel from
each city and municipality across the province, marking what officials
described as a “critical step” in preparation for the planned Coconut Processing
Facility—one of the flagship projects under Governor Henry S. Oaminal’s Asenso
Misamis Occidental development agenda.
“Real development starts with data and technology,” Governor
Oaminal emphasized in a statement. “Through geo-tagging, we can better identify
the coverage of our coconut plantations and tap into value-adding and rural
enterprise opportunities.”
The project is expected to significantly benefit local
coconut farmers, particularly in planning agricultural interventions,
identifying untapped potential areas, and building an inclusive coconut value
chain that could drive higher incomes and employment for Misamisnons.
Officials say the initiative underscores the province’s sustained efforts to harness its natural resources and position Misamis Occidental as a strategic hub for coconut-based industries in Northern Mindanao.
